Who does adoption benefit?

At My Choice Adoptions we believe people come to us for different needs, and adoption has different benefits. For adopting parents they get to achieve the dream of becoming parents and raising a child. For birth parents sometimes the benefit is seeing your child grow up with the stability you can’t offer right now. Other times birth parents can get financial help to make it through a really difficult time, plus the knowledge that their child will be raised with a family that can provide the type of life that you desire for them. Birth parents sometimes want a two-parent home for their child, or they feel like adoption can turn their difficult circumstances into a blessing for a family that is longing to raise a child. We’re happy to help you explore how adoption might benefit you. It’s always your choice, and it’s OK if your choice is to explore adoption and then choose to parent your child. It’s also OK to feel like placing your child is the best option, but to want counseling throughout the process. We’re here to support you.

What financial benefits might I receive?

Florida law allows birth mothers to receive financial assistance from the adoptive family they choose for their baby. This includes support before the baby is born and for 6 weeks after. You can get help with rent, phone, utilities, gas and groceries. We also provide counseling, assistance to you in accessing the best medical care and emotional support.

Is adoption giving up on my baby?

No! Adoption is the opposite of giving up. Adoption is not an easy decision to make, and it takes a lot of bravery and love for your baby. Sometimes older relatives might have negative views on adoption, but things have really changed! Now you can pick parents for your baby, and through open adoption you can stay in touch with your child as they grow up or receive updates.

What are the birth father rights in adoption?

Birth Fathers in Florida have both rights and responsibilities when it comes to their children.  First, Florida law requires that birth fathers support the mother of their child throughout the pregnancy, both emotionally and financially.  Second, birth fathers must be notified if there is an adoption plan and given an opportunity to parent if they so wish. However, birth fathers must take specific  steps to preserve their legal right to parent their child, including registering with Florida Vital Statistics and creating a parenting plan that outlines how the birth father will care for and support the child.

We understand that this can be a difficult subject to discuss with your baby’’s birth father.  We are here to help. We will work with you to help you decide how best to approach him about your decision to place your baby for adoption.  If you’d like, we can even meet with him to discuss your adoption plan, with or without you there. It’s your choice.

Will I feel sad if I choose adoption for my baby?

We would be lying if we said you would not. You will feel sad, and you will have to take time to grieve and adjust. We’ve worked with hundreds and hundreds of birth moms and we’ve heard that over time they feel adoption was the best choice they could have made for themselves, and for their baby.
